Morality Standards for Men and Women

A recently started TV show that is hosted by one of the most gorgeous women in Indian cinema has started a debate about morality. In this show a politician made a comment about an ‘item girl’ about wearing revealing clothes and dancing item numbers. This when he has never seen her on screen or otherwise before the show. Yesterday a ‘just-for-women’ radio channel was asking listeners about definition of morality and their views on whether we have different moral standards for men and women.

Wikipedia has a good page on morality.

Morality (from the Latin moralitas “manner, character, proper behavior”) has three principal meanings.

In its first descriptive usage, morality means a code of conduct held to be authoritative in matters of right and wrong. Morals are created by and define society, philosophy, religion, or individual conscience.

In its second, normative and universal sense, morality refers to an ideal code of conduct, one which would be espoused in preference to alternatives by all rational people, under specified conditions. To deny ‘morality’ in this sense is a position known as moral skepticism.

In its third usage, ‘morality’ is synonymous with ethics, the systematic philosophical study of the moral domain.

Do we believe that politicians, lawyers and police force are by and large immoral? My guess is that large part of the population does believe so. And we know that the predominant gender in these fields is male. So therefore, men are immoral :-). Somehow however ‘immoral’ seems to be more used in describing women. Interesting isn’t it.

Do we have different standards of morality for men and women? Of course we do; what a silly question. As a society we do have different standards for men and women (and if someone doesn’t agree to this, they are hypocrites, which also we as a society are!). Like I mentioned in my post on immodest garments, society is self organizing and it has taken us many years to reach where we are today and it will take us many years to reach where we want to get. In the journey there will be many pushes and pulls.

I am all for supporting the ‘item girl’. She should say all politicians are immoral, or mind your f^@$ing business. Society be damned, or what she does only reflects what’s acceptable in the society, after all there are millions of people who will pay to watch the item number she does.

However what would my reaction be when my daughter grows up and if she says “Dad, I got this great break to an item number, see what a wonderful bikini I will wear for the song…” GULP!!! HELP!!! I am already sweating at the very thought of it !!! Am I hypocrite? Bloody hell I am !!!

  1. Hi. I don’t get it. You may like dogs, but you don’t have to become one yourself. the same way, you may like item girls, but you have a perspective: that these girls have their own role to play in society, but that role is not something you would want your daughter to play.
Very attractive blog, I must say!

  2. I strongly object rambodoc. How dare you to compare women with dogs????
In this same society we have male stripers also, whom shall I compare with them???
Each role in this society exist as it has a raison d’etre. Be objective.
You seem to represent MCPs who are hypocrites living withdouble standards. For example:Men cheating their wives by indulging in extramarital affairs. Ask their opinion about their wives doing same . Are they ready to accept their wives doing same… No,Not at All.

  3. @Kelly Whoa girl take it easy. Dogs are beautiful animals. We will soon have dog lovers who will take offence to your comment and then we will have another war of words over dogs :-). I think Doc has been quite objective in his comment.

@rambodoc Great point. Not withstanding the comparison that seems to have triggered off a raw nerve, thanks. I am feeling better already Gurudev!

  4. Sorry for the controversy. If you write about morality, you are inviting it, anyways. I never intended a direct comparison between dogs and, dare I say it, women!
    Women!!
