Mental Disorder in India

October 14, 2008

So healthcare facilities are woefully inadequate for the 7 crore Indians reported with Mental Disorder according to a report by National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS).

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has termed the treatment gap – where 50-90 per cent people are unable to access health services – as a “serious human rights issue”.

Secretary General Akhil Kumar Jain says

“In the modern age we are now living with increasing stress owing to various factors. In the times to come, the stresses and strains will be further accentuated, thereby making mental health a very significant issue,”

I wonder if they counted the three people who tried to set a shopkeeper on fire for Rs. 100, or the people who killed a cook for not serving papad, or people who killed a dalit for offering Prasad in a Bihar temple.

Indians abhor the word psychiatrist as if only raving lunatics visit them and proper attention is not given to numerous psychological problems in India.

@Reema — Absolutely. It is sad and it shows in the various news items we see in the papers everyday of road rage and other crimes committed due to high stress levels.
