Of Young Authors and Nowhere to Live

May 28, 2012

I was waiting at the airport browsing books at the book store. I am fond of Indian English writing and was browsing through the books. I couldn’t help but notice that the authors are getting younger. Most books were touted as best sellers and their authors were probably in their 20s and 30s. There used to be a time when it too decades to become and established author, but these days it seems everyone starts early.

As I browsed through the back flaps of books reading about the authors, I noticed young women authors not rooted to any place. Urvashi, author of My Way is the Highway is “a twenty-nine-year-old resident of nowhere permanent in particular”. Rupa Bajwa, author of two books had in her bio “She is still grappling with the notion of a fixed address”.

And then I came across the simplest of bios, that of Advaira Kala of the Almost Single fame – “Advaira Kala lives in New Delhi.” At least someone’s found a place :-).

Wow, that’s a young author. I wouldn’t be surprised if the book was listed as National Bestseller or something like that.
