What Exactly are Ground Realities?

December 30, 2012

It’s funny how politicians are using “you don’t know ground reality” these days. Other people also use it but it sounds most funny when children of career politicians or career politicians use it. So other than the “dented and painted women’ fiasco, I also heard that the gentleman said that people demonstrating don’t know “ground realities”. And then another senior, very polished politician says in an television discussion that she knows ground realities, that she traveled in public transport when she was young because she couldn’t afford petrol for her car. Strange how only politicians seem to know “ground realities” and no one else has experienced them.

What exactly are these ground realities?

  • When I am stuck in traffic for four hours, is that ground reality?
  • When a boy in ambulance is critical because of traffic diversions, is that ground reality?
  • When urban working women have a hard time managing home and work, is that ground reality?
  • When urban working mothers don’t have a place to leave their children, is that ground reality?
  • When you stand in the queue for anything and everything, is that ground reality?
  • When you are running around to get admission for your children in any decent school, is that ground reality?
  • When even 95% marks in 12th is not enough to assure the children of a seat in a decent college, is that ground reality?
  • When there is no power in your colony for 4 to 6 hours, is that ground reality?
  • When your hard earned earnings are suddenly in jeopardy because a court order suddenly ensures that all property development work stops, with no recourse to get your money back from the developers, is that ground reality?
  • When you have to pay bribe to get brand your new car, is that ground reality?
  • When absolutely no work gets done in a government office without a bribe, is that ground reality?

Are “ground realities” only for those living in villages? Are ground realities only for poor?

Either way, have career politicians or their kin actually experienced any rural or urban ground realities first hand? Sure, they may be closer to the seeing these first hand. Even doctors see pain and disease first hand. But have they ever experienced it themselves?
